I was born in Grand Ledge, Michigan, which is west of Lansing, the state capitol. In the small town of Grand Ledge, I lived with my mom, dad, two sisters and two brothers: Amy, Pat, Susie, and Billy. Growing up in such a large family was very enjoyable, and there rarely was a down moment. While I watched my brothers and sisters grow, I also watched our family do the same... I am now a proud aunt to 13 nieces and nephews (and counting)!!! Although my parents seperated when I was a junior in High School, everyone (with the exception of my dad and his wife) live within 20 minutes of one another in Lansing. My dad remarried and now lives in Ohio with his lovely wife Jeanie and her two girls.
While growing up, I participated in many extracurricular activities, such as, soccer, basketball, volleyball, choir, musicals, was a Peer Assistance Leader, and a part of an international winning barbershop quartet (The Dazzling Diamonds). After high school I attended Michigan State University where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a focus on Language Arts.
After graduating from MSU, I moved to Houston, Texas with my boyfriend, David, where I taught 5th grade Reading, Writing, and Social Studies for three years at Williams Elementary School in the Pasadena Independent School District. The three years I spent at Williams were extremly enjoyable and I was honored to recieve the First year Teacher of the Year Award in 2008-2009 and the Together We Can: Creating Magic Award in 2009-2010. This year I was offered a position as a 5th grade Dual Language (English component) teacher at Milstead Middle School and have loved working with students who are bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.
I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Literacy through Michigan State University and expect to graduate on May 5th, 2012! In my free time, I love to work on arts and crafts, read, cook, play sports, go to sporting events (GO GREEN), fish, sing, volunteer, go to museums, travel, workout, go to the beach and spend time with family and friends.
Ever since I was a young child I knew my calling was to be a teacher. I am so excited that my dream has become a reality, so that I can share the gift that was given to me: to inspire youth to believe in themselves and to become great individuals in our global economy.
